Doing karaoke can be addicting and what a great release to sing your heart out! You will have a great time and there will definitely be laughter – hopefully all in good fun!
Choosing a good microphone for karaoke can be challenge ~ there is a huge difference between a karaoke mic and say a professional condenser microphone. Condenser microphones are common in studios, and have a much greater frequency response and transient response; this aids in the ability to reproduce the “speed” of an instrument or voice. They generally have a louder output and are much more sensitive to loud sounds. They require the use of a power supply, usually a 48 volt “phantom power” and this is supplied easily by most mixing boards or external power supplies (look for a switch with either
“P 48” or “48V” on the channel strip or on the back of the mixer).
The Wire Realm (http://www.wirerealm.com/guides/best-microphone-for-karaoke) provides some tips when choosing a karaoke mic:
Budget: One of the most important things to look at is what you can afford. There are some really good priced mics that are specifically for karaoke.
Wired or wireless: Both are great – wired are cheaper and provide a stable connection with a clear sound quality, where a wireless is very convenient and less of a hassle when you are doing karaoke. However, wireless can have some interruption due to interference.
Wired: Should you go the wired route, look for mics that have a long connection cord – longer than 10′ – makes moving about so much easier!
Connection: Check your machine’s connectivity port – most systems use a 1/4″ (6.3 mm) plug-in (adapters are available should it be needed).
Microphones: Some good mics with a decent $$ value are Emerson M189, Behringer UltraVoiceXM8500 and Axess MPWL1504-BK.
Happy karaoke singing!
